San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald and several Azalea Park residents celebrated the 104th birthday last month of longtime area resident Virgie Hazel McCain, a founding member of the City Heights Community Development Corp., at the park recently renamed in her honor.

McCain and William Henry Carter, a longtime San Diego firefighter, successfully advocated for a small green space on a once-vacant lot that had been used as an informal gathering place. That was more than 40 years ago. At the request of the Azalea Recreation Council, the city recently agreed to change the name of the site at the edge of Manzanita Canyon to the Virgie Hazel McCain and William H. Carter Mini Park.
